Thanksgiving Thoughts; The Season of Gratitude

“15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 3:15-17

In the season of thanksgiving, we take this time to reflect on our good graces and pay homage to those who have added value to our lives.

The tradition of Thanksgiving is celebrated in November typically on the last Thursday of the month. This day family and friends come together and give thanks over a feast that includes Turkey, aunties favorite stuffing, grandma’s ultimate mac and cheese and your cousins’ apple pie whom says she makes its every year but everybody knows she ventured to either Costco or BJ and that one uncle who always, always gets drunk.

We always end up at the family member who has the biggest house because they can fit most people. The memories that are made on this day last for sharing a lifetime of great stories.

But this is just one day. There are 365 days a year we must also remember to always be grateful on these other days.

When I think about where I was ten years ago and compare my life to this very day I can’t help but be grateful because my oh my I was a hot mess of a human being. But I thank God daily that he has shown me grace and has placed the right people in my life to help me do better for myself and to others. My husband is one of those people….his level of patience is undeniable I swear. Honestly speaking if I was a man I wouldn’t even date me back then, but he saw beyond the “crazy” and embraced the humanity in me.

“Sometimes ours light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being. Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light.”

-Albert Schweitzer

Life is such a precious thing, and even though we live in a cruel world I still believe that there is so much love left to give and to receive. Always be grateful for what you have even the littlest thing for what you don’t have you may not need or are not mentally ready to receive. Be deliberate with sharing gratitude to others, you never know what someone else is going through and what a positive impact a simple smile can have.

Try to always be of service to others for karma doesn’t only reward the bad it rewards the good deeds too.

“Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy.”

-Dietrich Bonhoeffer
